Your Weekend Events

HONK!: If you happen to be in Boston this weekend, there’s really only one place you should be: wherever the marching bands are. Saturday and Sunday, the 27 bands of HONK! will take to the streets of Davis and Harvard square (along with points between) for a celebratory reclamation of public spaces with badass beats and insistent horns. If you can, you must. With hundreds of musicians playing joyously to spontaneous dance, for free, out of love for the music and community, HONK! is a revelation, an inspiration, and just really good for your soul.
Saturday, and Sunday Various Times // Davis Square, Somerville, MA // FREE

FUNK OWL: New Orleans and Ireland. Po’ boys and potatoes. Tubaluba and Owl N’ Thistle. Tonight, brave your way down 1st to witness one of Seattle’s best funk hip-shakers sweat up wood paneling. 14-piece Tubaluba (three tubas, three trumpets, two trombones, three saxes (alto, bari, tenor), and then on one: keyboardist, drummer, and singer) is sexy and talented, tackling old soul covers at a swagger and slinging hash-hot originals. They’re good, is what we’re saying. And in the Owl N’ Thistle? They’re gonna cook.
Friday 10 p.m. // Owl N’ Thistle // FREE

SPEAK ALEXIE: It really seems like Sherman Alexie shouldn’t need an introduction in this town. He’s been Seattle forever, a tall leader with a voice of mythical distance. Chances are good you (or someone you know) has read The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven or seen Smoke Signals. (And if not, get on that, would you?) They are works of a man who has tales of things he’s seen, and for all the ways he’s found to realize them, the best is in him talking to you. Seize this rare opportunity to be a part of Alexie’s audience, to be taken into his confidence.
Saturday 2 p.m. // Seattle Public Library, Ballard Branch // FREE

DB BEATS UP THE PARK: Meanwhile on Capitol Hill, Decibel Festival steps out of the clubs for an afternoon in the park. Starting at noon, Volunteer Park will thump and unz until attendees erupt in ecstatic dance. The line-up includes San Fran native Comma, label boss and DJ Salva, Warp artist Eprom, Portland’s Danny Corn and Natasha Kmeto, along with our own Ill Cosby, DJ Sonny Chiba, and Hz Donut. This is just one of many events Decibel is throwing this weekend (View the entire schedule here (pdf)), but if you want a free all-ages sampling, this is the one for you.
Saturday 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. // Volunteer Park (Chop Suey if raining) // FREE

EAT AND TRUCK: You’ve danced all weekend. Hung over, wrung out, blissfully exhausted from debauchery too strong for memory. It’s Sunday and you need food. May we suggest The Mobile Chowdown, the recurring food truck invitational, this time with Marination Mobile, Where Ya at Matt, Skillet, Maximus Minimus, Veraci Pizza, Parfait Ice Cream, Lumpia World, Walla Walla truck, Andrae’s Kitchen, Raney Brothers BBQ, Street Donuts, Big Food Mobile, Pretzelwagen, Snout & Co., and A Lunch in Hand. Doesn’t that list basically promise at least one fortifying delectable? Some perfect vector of quick and care that you can purchase and eat. Your stomach will thank you.
Sunday p.m. // West Seattle Junction // Free
